Intro to Fly Tying

Spend the winter months preparing for your next fishing trip. Modern fly tying has been around since the mid 1800’s but there are records dating back to the 200’s that used this same creative strategy. Now you can be a part of this historic tradition.

This course will go over some of the basic tools, terms, and techniques for creating useful, basic flies. Application based, participants will create their own flies and leave with physical tools and skills to continue at home.

Anglers benefit from this practical craft by building up a better knowledge of insects and other food sources used by specific fish in this area and beyond. Come join other fishing enthusiast.

Intro to Woodworking: Build the Perfect Bluebird House

A neighbor of the studio in Charlton brought them an old birdhouse that had seen years of successful service but was ready to be retired. She wanted to make another just like it because it had worked so well for her and her birds. Main Street Studio looked closely at the design and decided to make a workshop out of it! This way many people can go home with a nesting box that has been proven to work locally in Charlton, helping to reestablish the American Bluebird in our area.

This workshop will teach basic woodworking skills like measuring, cutting, drilling, carving and assembly with weatherproof fasteners. We’ll work with our native and abundant white pine. We’ll learn some tricks to help keep the insides of the nesting box dry for our little blue friends. Lastly, we’ll learn how this design helps to deter predators and competitors, as well as help the little fledglings get out of the nest and take their first flight.

This workshop is ideal for beginners, or for those that just need some space and quiet time to complete a simple project. Kids over 12 are welcome with an accompanying parent or guardian.

Beginner Basket Making

One of our longest classes of the series, this one will offer students with absolutely no knowledge of basketweaving the chance to learn and create a kitchen bread basket from start to finish. Common hand tools from home can be used. All weaving materials will be provided. Do not miss the opportunity to learn this life skill and add some hand-crafted and aesthetically pleasing storage to your home.

*** Please bring an old towel, heavy duty scissors, clothes pins, and an awl or screwdriver.

Creating Your Barn Quilt

A barn quilt takes the concept of a quilt square, makes it big, and brings it outdoors to so that it can be seen at a distance when hung on their roadside canvases. Maybe you have enjoyed the barn quilt trails in the area, or you enjoy traditional quilting. Here is your introduction to this charming folk practice. You will be able to choose from several different quilt block designs and can personalize the colors. All materials are provided and you will leave with a beautiful 2×2 barn quilt suitable for hanging indoors or outdoors. Beginners are absolutely welcome!
